Overview

Tarangire National Park, is a national park in Tanzania's Manyara region, in which it has established in 1970, under the Tanzania National Park Authority(TANAPA). The Name of the Park originates from the Tarangire River, that crosses the park. The Tarangire river is a primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire ecosystem during the annual dry season.

The Tarangire ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeests and Zebras, during the dry season the thousands of wild animals concentrate in the Tarangire National Park, from the surroundings wet-season dispersal and calving areas. The park is nearest to Arusha Town which is good for day trips tours which it may takes two to three hours drive to the Park.


It covers an area of approximately 2850 sq kilometer(1100 sq miles). The Tarangire National Park is the 6th largest National Park in Tanzania, which its covers area as is mentioned above. The Park is famous and most popular for its large herds of an elephants, and mini-wildlife migration that takes place during the dry season which sees about 250000 animals enter the Park.


The Tarangire National Park, lies between the meadows of the Masai Steppes to the South east and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the North and west and in the northern part of the Park is the permanent river Tarangire which is also known as the life-line of the Park, particularly in the dry season when most of the region is totally dry. The landscape of Tarangire area is composed of granitic ridges, river valley, and swamps. The park has different mixed vegetations of Acacia woodland, combretum woodland, seasonally flooded grassland and baobab trees, These giants(baobabs) are also known as upside down trees, this is because of its peculiar shape, when  it's bare of leaves its spreading, twisted branches look like roots. 


The park has a healthy population of both creatures both big and small animals. The park has plenty of resident animals although some tend to migrate depending on the time of year, the most commonly seen animals are elephants, giraffes, impalas, warthogs, zebras, wildebeests, dwarf mongoose and ostriches. Also however predators may also be seen as well as Lions, Leopards, on some rare occasions even wild dogs have been spotted, further more the park is home of 550 species of birds. Other animals which you may see when you in Tarangire National Park - Greater kudus and lesser kudus as well as Oryx also Roan Antelopes.


Elephants are virtually guaranteed here in and the vast herds of cape buffaloes, as well as both two gazelles(Thompson's and grants gazelles),Zebras (Buchell's zebras), Warthogs, all are hunted by lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and even African wild dogs. The park is also famous for the Termite mounds that dot the landscape, those that have been abandoned are often the dwells to dwarf mongooses.


Tarangire National National Park can be reached via paved road south from Arusha in two to three hours, When you are in Tarangire National Park, you may be lucky to spot the tree-climbing Python, for which the park is famous for
